Wilderness Resort Photography in British Columbia by Ian Harland

Lots of work has been put into resorts and it’s time to show it off. Guests equate high-quality photos with a high-quality property and overall experience. Without great photos, much of the money and time put into the resort will go to waste. Here are some photos I shot for Terrace Beach Resort in Ucluelet.

All resort photography projects are edited within a week of the shoot day by a team of professional architectural photography editors.

Coastal Rainforest Safaris & Seawolf Adventures by Ian Harland

In September of 2020, I took a personal trip up to Northern Vancouver Island to photograph wildlife and landscapes. While there, I went on a wildlife tour with Sea Wolf Adventures and Coastal Rainforest Safaris which work closely together. A few months later they hired me to photograph their tours and help with social media on a regular basis.

When tourists are trying to decide where to go on a trip, it will often come down to imagery. While words and reviews are important, visuals are what help potential clients envision what the experience will be like. If you’re part of a tourism agency, tourism board, or a company looking for new photos to stand out, I’d love to hear from you!

Sea to Sky Air - Aerial Photography + Video by Ian Harland

Sea To Sky Air is a Squamish-based aerial sightseeing company that gives passengers the opportunity to see everywhere from the Howe Sound to the Garibaldi Peak from the air. While their tours are incredible and jaw-dropping, they didn’t have very many high-quality photos and videos to show off what they were offering. They wanted me to photograph the various landscapes of their tours throughout the seasons as well as what it felt like to be on a tour with them.

Over the past few years, aerial photography has become one of my favorites types to shoot. I’ve had the pleasure of working on a consistent basis with Sea to Sky Air but have also worked with Sky Helicopters, Blackcomb Helicopters, Maverick Helicopters, Atomic Air, and Avanti Air to create images that show their tours in the best light possible. Scroll to the bottom to see some of my work with them!

Thursday Boots by Ian Harland

Thursday Boots is a New-York City-based boot and footwear company. Their boots range from dressy work shoes, loafers, premium sneakers to fashionable rugged boots. They reached out wanting me to photograph their more rugged styles around Vancouver because of the forests, mountains, and ocean. I shoot multiple times for them every month so that they have a constant stream of content for social media, their website, and, online advertising.

They’ve now expanded with a sneaker sister company called Nothing New which makes their shoes of recycled plastic bottles. Pretty cool eh? To see my shoots for them, click here.

Thursday Boots New York

In the fall of 2022, Thursday boots flew me to New York to photograph some of their boots, shoes, and soon-to-be-released leather jackets. Here are some of the photos from that trip.

Shadow's Nowhere Island by Ian Harland

For the past 17 years, Shadow has been living completely off-grid in a floating island home largely made out of salvaged material he’s found around the Pitt River close to Vancouver, British Columbia. Being completely alone (sometimes up to 6 months at a time) in such a small part of the world, he’s has had a unique perspective on the threats facing the area. What first began as a desire to escape the chaotic world around him, turned into a mission to protect nature until he feels as though he isn’t needed anymore.

During my visit with him, he recounted some heartbreaking stories like when he watched a Black Bear grow up in the area until the day he found it recently illegally killed by poachers. He also explained that many types of wildlife aren’t able to thrive in the area like they used to. Fruit-bearing trees that used to feed hundreds of birds were removed, industrial waste is polluting the waters and the area is becoming more developed and part is even turning into a park.

Despite considering himself a guardian of the ecosystem, the local government and police have repeatedly tried to evict him over the years. Sometimes visiting him multiple times per week, setting up cameras pointing at his property, and removing things he builds. Now that park construction has begun around the marsh he lives, the future seems uncertain for him.

Cruising Around Cuba by Ian Harland

This was a job for a frequent tourism agency client who wanted me to document one of their tours as well as whatever else I found interesting in Cuba. The tour was mostly concentrated around Havana but once they had flown back home, I made my way to Vinales, a small farming town a few hours from the city. On the bus ride there, I was able to meet a local who was able to connect me with a farmer to photograph.

While on personal time, I decided to document the fascinating subculture of climbers that call Cuba home. A reason why the climbing community hasn’t matched the incredible landscape has been because of politics. The government doesn’t allow climbing even though they rarely enforce their rules. Since they are communist, obtaining gear is one of the big challenges for the locals. They rely entirely on donations from visitors and climbing companies. The two climbers that I was talking to want the sport to grow and even allow locals to use the gear from their shed to see if they are interested. The future of climbing in the country remains uncertain but the rocks aren’t going away any time soon.

5 Days in the Yukon by Ian Harland

Leyo, a small Taiwanese tourism agency, asked me to document one of the trips they were in the process of planning in the Yukon. We did everything from snowmobiling on a lake with a hockey rink to driving 3 hours towards a Taiwanese superstar musician who lives in a remote part of the Yukon.
